Why do I need a hoisting license?

Not only is it the law, but a hoisting license is needed on both private and public property to limit liability, reduce accidents, and ensure a safe work environment.

Can I be fined for operating without a license?

Operators can receive a $500-$3,000 fine and/or 3 months imprisonment.

Permitting someone to operate can receive a $1,000-$3,000 fine and/or 3 months imprisonment.

What types of equipment requires a hoisting license?

Anything that can:

  • Lift over 500 lbs
  • Lift over 10ft high
  • Has a 1/4 yard bucket capacity or higher

(Forklifts, lulls, excavators, front and loaders, backhoes, pay loaders, uniloaders, compact machinery, etc.)

Is there any equipment that is excluded from the hoisting license?

Yes, over the road haulage trucks and cherry pickers are excluded.

How often do I need to renew my hoisting license(s)?

Every 2 years your hoisting license(s) need to be renewed. There is a 1 year grace period where your license is considered inactive (after this year, a re-test in necessary).

What do I need to renew my license(s)?

4 hours of class time is required for every restriction. You'll also need $60 for the state renewal fee, an up-to-date valid medical card, and a copy of your drivers license (mail in a 2x2 photo for an out of state license).

Do I need to take a re-test?

Only if your 1 year grace period has ended; otherwise, no re-test or state testing is required.
